We go over the fence to trade life updates that explain why game nights slow down and why the stories around the hobby still matter. Promotions, move-ins, audiobooks, TV binges, and review drama all collide with one big theme: how we stay part of the board gaming community even when we are not playing much.
• Vic’s Games Y Mas crossover and a “board game bestie” dispute
• Green Player first impressions format and a Rock Hard 1977 hot take tease
• Resident Evil playthrough project and the long road through the series
• Amanda’s promotion to post office supervisor and the reality of long shifts
• Project Hail Mary love and getting pulled deeper into Dungeon Crawler Carl
• Local game store readings and why audiobooks can hook new fans
• Mike’s move into a refurbished trailer and what that does to hobby time
• Fourth Wing audiobook reactions and the awkward side of dramatized scenes
• Instagram long-form reviews as a creative reset
• Designer and publisher backlash and why “not for me” should be allowed
• Prototype content risks and why polished rulebooks matter
• Fate Of The Fellowship as a “deep shallow” strategy game
• PAX talk, May the 4th plans, and Star Wars board game picks

SPEAKER_01

All right, lock it up, everybody. It's time for the Operation Game Night Podcast. Enough bopping around in the green room. It's time to start the show. I'm your host, Travis Smith, and I am joined, as always, by three people that are not always here. Amanda, Mike, and Vic. Welcome back to the show. Thank you for joining me again today. We're going over the fence.

SPEAKER_03

Thanks for having me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. It's so nice to be over the fence here with you. Yeah. Let's talk about things uh that we've been doing outside of board gaming. Yeah. Uh Vic, why don't you start us off?

SPEAKER_00

Okay, I want to say something real quick. Uh, you know, uh, I just got done recording an episode from you know Gamesy Mosspot. You know, check it out if you guys ever want to. Uh, we did an episode with the lovely Amanda, and I want to I want to just shout out real quick that it's official that Amanda has claimed me as her board game bestie. So uh sorry guys, she she announced it on that episode, and so she we're besties now in board game world. So uh sorry, Travis, Jared McClay. All right, you're wearing a game's EMOS T shirt.

SPEAKER_03

Oh man, we I mean we point of order. All right, Travis is my BGA bestie. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So point of order.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, it's okay.

SPEAKER_03

You can't you can have the virtual one. I get it, it's fine. Yeah, you stole from me. You stole her from me, so yeah, yeah, all right.

First Impressions And Contest Bragging

SPEAKER_00

You guys can have the virtual one, we'll have the real one. So, Vic, what what was your episode about? So, we actually did a green player episode, uh Green Player where we do reviews on games, first time expression, first time impressions of games that we've only played at least a maximum count of three or less times. That's I think it's still considered new, brand new. You still don't know much about the game, you're not an expert, so we did that. And I'm I had Amanda on there with our buddy Raul, and uh we talked about Rock Hard 1977. Cool, give it our first impressions. Um, when the episode comes out, you know, which I actually just got the text from my editor saying that it's done, so he worked he worked pretty quick, he worked really quick. So I got started. Um, so uh we have kind of a twist at the end when we did some rankings, and uh Amanda and Raoul gave uh two solid rankings, and I gave uh threw a curveball at them. Give him a hot take of my rankings. So hot take check that episode out, and then uh shout out to uh you guys, Travis and Mike. Um we had the results in, we had a contest going on, you know, earlier.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And so the results are in, and I lost and and that clay, Travis, and uh Mike lost actually, and I won. Uh Ray owes us money, yeah. Yeah, you guys actually owe me there. Yeah, you owe him money. Uh you actually have to buy him uh battleship, divine three versions of battleship. Uh so I'm very excited to announce the results. We'll be doing that tomorrow. Um at the time of this recording. Yeah, it it'll be tomorrow. So this will come out on Thursday, so the results should be out there. So the results should be out there. So by the time it's out, you guys can congratulate already, you know, whoever whoever won. I'm not gonna say who it is, but you know, spoiler, but uh yeah, go check out that episode if you want to hear about the games nomas credit to Travis Nomas, credit to Travis right there, giving that that title I think he came out, came out with the banger right there.

Resident Evil Marathon Plans

SPEAKER_01

Nice. And if I'm if I'm uh you know boosting up the games emos podcast, uh we are doing a Resident Evil playthrough, and that is outside the realm of board gaming. Uh, we have been playing through all the Resident Evil games. We are now on Resident Evil 3, and we will be recording that one shortly. Uh bro, I I'm itching, bro. I'm itching.

SPEAKER_00

I want to record, I want to talk about this. Absolutely.

SPEAKER_01

I've been slowing Vic down at every turn, and he's waiting for me.

SPEAKER_00

So how many are there? Uh 29 games. 27, 29 games. Yeah, there's a lot.

SPEAKER_01

And we say Resident Evil 3, it's our fourth episode, so like we're we're moving along. We'll get there.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we did zero, one, two, and three. We got a couple more raccoon city event stuff to do, and then we're gonna dive into the longer games. So that one's gonna take a while, especially with four. Four's gonna cause us a little bit of a headache because it's a long time. That one's gonna be a while.

SPEAKER_01

That's gonna be a while. That's gonna be a while, but I'm that might be a uh that might be a Travis's moving across the country type game. Like, let me play it on my Steam Deck and then I we can rally up when I get where I'm going.

SPEAKER_00

Don't worry, the the more I gotta wait, the more I gotta uh dive deeper into the lore, which I I love it more. So it's that's right. It's a win-win, it's a win-win. But I've been loving those series that would be good to collab, and man, like uh yeah, I get uh giddy every time we move on to the next game and start you know recording. It's just such a blast.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, it's always good to hang out with you on the Games E Moss podcast. Uh Amanda, tell me what you've been doing.

SPEAKER_03

Board game adjacent or not? What are you looking for? I mean, my over the over the fence is non-board game, correct?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So I've been not board gaming because I got a promotion.

SPEAKER_01

Let's go. I have a media asset for this.

SPEAKER_03

I am now the supervisor of the Pace Florida Post Office. Yeah, way to go. Yeah, pretty excited about that. It's uh going well. Uh last week was a lot of uh like three 12-hour days in a row, just because I'm learning everything from opening to closing and everything in the middle. And this week I will be the closing supervisor. So all on my own.

SPEAKER_01

Congratulations.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I'm super excited. So, not a lot of board gaming, um, but a lot of learning.

SPEAKER_01

Watch any shows, watch any movies.

SPEAKER_03

Um, and we oh yeah, I watched Project Hill Mary. Oh yes! Has everybody seen it? All four of you? Oh my god.

SPEAKER_02

I don't go to the movies office.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Fair enough.

SPEAKER_03

Um, but yeah, I loved it. Amaze, amaze, amaze. Amaze, amaze, amaze. Um, want to read the book, but yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the book is amazing. The book amazing.

Project Hail Mary And Dungeon Crawler Carl

SPEAKER_03

That's what I've heard. I've heard so excited about that. Also, um, I'm uh about halfway through Dungeon Crawler Carl number two.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. You're like in the slump, you're in it right now.

SPEAKER_03

It's it's slow going just because I haven't had a lot of time to read. And yeah. So number two, however, uh playing ketchup, well, not catch up, but there is a local uh board game. It's called uh Games and Grub, little like pub and grill that just opened. They're doing Tuesday night readings of Dungeon Crawler Carl. Yeah, so we went to the first one, and now mailman Gary is he's on the D uh the Dungeon Crawler Carl train, and we downloaded the audiobooks so that he can listen to him at work.

SPEAKER_01

And the audiobooks are so good. That guy, Jeff Hayes, is so talented. Yeah, is it dramatized? It's dramatized, and he he does all the guy, he does it all. Incredible, incredible. Every character, like you can he does a voice for every character and you can tell them out, they're all unique. It's so good. It's so that's so cool.

SPEAKER_03

So good.

SPEAKER_01

Nice, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so yeah, that's about all I've been doing.

SPEAKER_01

Is number number two is Iron Tangle, correct? No, okay. Number three, you're about to once you finish two, number three is a little bit of a slump, like okay, a little hard to follow. Gotta push through that one, and then you're on to bigger, better things. It gets really good, really good. Gotcha. Very nice. Um there is one called the Anarchist Cookbook.

SPEAKER_03

That's like six or seven.

SPEAKER_01

It is, I think it's number six. Um six, I think. You know what I learned the other day is you know how dungeon crawler carl, all the book jackets are like bright neon. So the anarchist cookbook does not have a bright neon code covering, and it doesn't light up under black light because there's like thematic reasons to that. It's kind of like um uh what is it? The half-blood prince diary, like he's getting notes from them outside the game, and it like it's supposed to be a secret, so like the book jacket doesn't light up like the other ones do. So check it out if you have them on your shelves. Interesting. Okay, okay, nice. Cool, very cool. Uh Mike, what have you been up to?

SPEAKER_02

Uh, I've got a lot going on, actually. I have not been playing many board games at all. Um, so my whole life is outside of it. Uh, for for starters, I've uh started living with my girlfriend, uh, which is the first time I've lived with a significant other ever. Uh so at 39. So we just moved into this 40-foot trailer that we she and I and her brother refurbished. Yeah. Um and then uh a lot of trench digging uh the in the last couple days. Um, so you can imagine how how fun that is and fulfilling uh that is. Uh so yeah, man.

SPEAKER_03

Man, yeah, that's that's a commitment going from not just a regular apartment or a house, you're just yeah, you're in it now.

SPEAKER_01

Uh habitating on hard mode. I love it.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Well, as Travis has pointed out and scene, we have quite the yard. Uh uh, even comes even with a scissor lift. Uh and then uh but the the most rewarding thing is Eleanor, my dog, which you've all probably seen. She has a yard where she chases birds, rabbits, snakes, uh all day long. Yeah, no, she can she she saved me from a snake when I was laying in the hammock last weekend. Oh so yeah, she's uh she's enjoying it. Um and then also on the audiobook front, I'm not a reader. Uh and every I think I read I audiobooked the uh Red Rising when I played the Red Rising board game over two years ago, and that was probably the last time I read a book. Um but living with uh Riley, you know, I hear uh she wants to tell me about the stories she's reading, and that is the fourth wing that she has picked and started reading. Have any of you read the fourth wing? No, um, it is a dysentopian feeling, like Game of Thrones, dragons, and griffins and stuff. And I was like, this is sounds really interesting, actually. Um, and it mostly is until we get to uh smut, and then um I was gonna say I think it's romanticy, isn't it? Yeah, there's a lot of like like Game of Thronesy like getting prepared for battle, and then there's like a 10-minute dramatized reading of Smut. Uh that I'm sitting there like, this is uncomfortable for me. You're like, oh good. Yeah, so uh but for the most part, I've enjoyed the book. I I got like two more hours in it.

SPEAKER_01

Um like breathing heavily into the microphone or like yes, yeah, they it's bad.

SPEAKER_02

Uh even she she listened to one of the scenes the last night while I was like entrance laying in bed, and it was she was like, No, no, no, no, no, no. You know, it was like what she's like, that's not how it should be at all. And I'm like, well, that's what I've been listening to. So yeah, this is what you got in the end. Yeah, so uh I've been introduced into Smut. Uh good storyline, otherwise. Um but yeah, and then uh yeah, hopefully uh get some back to gaming now that things have settled down and yeah, we've gotten a few things in and a couple new favorites that we've played over the game.

SPEAKER_03

So have you had to cull your collection to fit, or do you have like a whole separate trailer for the games? Uh uh a he shed.

SPEAKER_02

No, uh luckily, uh over the last year and a half I've called about 150 games. By the way, I I have your package ready to send in my car, Travis. I found it again for 20 strong, so that'll be coming your way.

SPEAKER_01

Excellent.

SPEAKER_02

Um and then uh but with that I still have about 270 games. Uh uh, well, we have a very large TV cabinet with every card game and small box game, and then her parents live next door and have an empty room, so all her game equipment and uh like exercise equipment and my two galaxy type shelves below board games, uh, are still all over there. Um but yeah, um I've been good about slowing down on my purchases. Um, so yeah, but for the most part, it's been great. Uh otherwise.

When Reviews Trigger Backlash

SPEAKER_01

So do you want to give a shout out to your Instagram? Because I've noticed like you've done the long form reviews on Instagram, and I'm really appreciating this like tonal shift that's going on with uh meetle that loses.

SPEAKER_02

So I I had done the bare win uh plays board plays games or board games after that. Um, and then I I'm not gonna lie, I I had a few, like I did a few reviews, like I couple two designers in particular messaged me and gave me a bunch of crap because I said it wasn't for me. Um, and that kind of killed it for me. And then I was just got more and more like nah, I don't want to do it anymore. Yeah, uh something about moving here. I was like reinvigorated and changed my name to the meeple that loses because Riley wins most board games. Uh so it just is very fitting. Actually, I think most of you have beaten me on BGA even too. I mean, I don't think it has many times. Uh uh, you've gotten close on tapestry a few times, though. Um, so yeah, I started doing some uh some more reviews. Uh Rio Grand sent me a couple games that I'll be going over. And uh so yeah, so that's that's starting up again. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I just uh I just read your um Druids of Adora and you did a great job. And that game, yeah, we got to do that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I loved it. I loved it.

SPEAKER_04

That was great.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and then uh War of the Posies. That was the game we played last night that was really fun. The little light depth elder, yeah, botany. So yeah, but yeah, so check it out. The meeple that loses. So I think at some point I might even branch into reels and video. We'll see. Okay, I've been watching Vic's things, and I'm like, maybe, maybe.

SPEAKER_00

I don't even know what I'm doing, brother. That's kind of why I'm like, maybe no kidding. I'm not professional. So I just I just post up and see what happens, and yeah, that's kind of where professional. I just play one on YouTube, and that's I'll I'll just watch my two views and then be like, all right, cool.

SPEAKER_03

Nice me.

SPEAKER_02

This there you go. Uh and uh by the way, I was listening and watching last time with you and Clay. Uh with fade, yeah, always there. I'll always be watching you. Yeah, what is that? Phil Collins song, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Uh yeah, man. I I yeah, I really enjoyed your long uh your long form reviews, and I had kind of the same thing happen where like I got sent a copy for review. He said, you know, none of this is done, the rule book's not done. Go ahead and give it a try. And I did not like the game really made no sense. It was not satisfying to play. And then I posted the episode, I sent this episode to that publisher and that designer and said, Hey, episode's up. Here are the things that I think could be improved upon. I was thought I was being productive, and they were just like, You didn't read the rule book correctly, and you're not even playing right, and like just tore it up. And I was yeah, I got kind of a sour taste in my mouth, and not that I'm like against reviews, and I I appreciate when people are willing to send us their games and let us try them ahead of time. But yeah, man, like what pressure if they're gonna like start clapping back at you and like getting angry that you had feedback for them.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um I feel like if they're at the point of publishing, like they would be open to feedback a little bit, but understand that not every game's for everybody. Like, I was gonna say, I've seen uh Stonemer send games to people that have said, I'm not I don't like wingspan. Yeah, then they send him worm span and they he he like still like I still don't like it. Yeah, and then they well in that case, this case they loved it, but yeah, but like you know, you you you take that risk when you do that, not every game's for everybody. Um and I in the one game I even said I can see why people would love this, but it's not for me. Um because I except for uh I mean more recently I like lighter games, but uh yeah, light games aren't my thing typically. And I said that, and yeah, he was not happy about it. I got many BGG uh uh hate messages from really wow.

SPEAKER_03

See, that's why I'm strictly anti anything that's not published. Like I I love to go to conventions and play like the unpub games and the you know prototypes and stuff, but I do not want to do any kind of content on anything that's not finished or like polished, or I just or it's gonna make changes. I just I like I want to watch Rodney have him teach me how to play it. I want to like, yeah, check somebody else, you know. I don't want to read the rule book, I don't want to have to edit the rule book, I don't know, I don't want cardboard pieces, you know. Like I just like I love unpubs, you know, I love to go see them at conventions and see people's passion, but those are the people who are open to feedback, yeah, you know, yeah. But anyway, like Travis said, if you're at the point of publishing, but you're not you're still not like taking any critique, critique, even positive feedback, then yep, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I appreciate I I will always support the little guy. I play so many weird, like one-off, yeah, like indie games. If indie is like a term that we use in board gaming, uh but yeah, I it's hard to like review those types of games and have a cognizant thought about it after a couple of plays, and then put it out there and then have people come at you like that. I can't believe people came at you on board game geek. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_02

That is crazy. Uh and that was a published game. Uh that's even worse. Yeah, that was a few years, that was like a year and a half ago, I think. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh two years ago. But yeah, so that that changed a lot. Um, now I I'm only gonna if I even if I get a game, I'm I'm only gonna post it if I like it. If not, I'll just kind of leave it alone. Like, yeah, or post it as just like a yeah uh what is that, uh story or something that I played it.

Deep Or Shallow Game Debate

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. Well, since you were watching last week, Mike, uh do you think that um the Fate of the Fellowship is a deep game or is it a shallow game?

SPEAKER_02

I well, when you said that, I was like, you know, I haven't I played it five times, yeah, but I haven't played it since I first got it months and months ago. Um so it's like let me go on BGA and give it a go one more time just to refresh my you can't play it anymore on BGA. Uh yeah, they took it down. Oh well, it's there, but it's every time I try to load it, it's loading. Um, I think uh it's gonna sound weird. It's a deep shallow game. Like I feel like you could like you can make it very strategic and you really got a plan how you move, but in the end, it is what it is. You're gonna you can only do so much, and you're most likely gonna lose. Uh like I think it could go, it's a little bit of both. Um, I I think it is a brain burner for sure when you're trying to figure out how to move your troops around the board. Um, and that is very pleasing. It's not like shallow, like I feel like uh battle for Hoth, Star Wars Battle for Hoth. That's like a shallow strategy game. Fun, just shallow. I think you have a lot more choices with uh, especially if you start getting more players into it. Because I would love to play what is it? I think it's five player, you can get up to in that one. I would love to play five player at 11 o'clock at night till four in the morning. Um kind of kind of kind of thing with that. That's a tapestry callback. That was a long night.

SPEAKER_01

But they did have it at um World Series of Board Gaming. I really wish we would have had the time to play that one.

SPEAKER_02

So maybe maybe if we do if I can make it out to PAX, then we can get some people and do that and War of the Ring.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So we should do that. Uh are you going to PAX? I mean, I we're thinking about it. We're all we all collectively, collectively thinking about it. OG and Fest. Renaming PAX to OG and Fest.

SPEAKER_00

OG N Fest, let's go. Nice. I dig it.

SPEAKER_01

That's good stuff.

SPEAKER_03

What about you, Travis? What have you been up to? Yeah, man.

TV Picks And An Andor Rewatch Pitch

SPEAKER_01

I didn't even realize that I hadn't gone yet. Yeah, we have been yabbered on. Yeah, we have not uh been playing a ton of games, been playing here and there. Uh I played Drop Drive the other night, which I am going to talk about on a future episode. Uh but uh we've been Just like burning through shows, and like we watch an episode here and there, baby goes down for a nap. We watch an episode, lay down in bed, watch an episode. Like we uh have just been flying through episodes of Rooster on HBO Max. Steve Carell. It is good, yeah. Steve Carell. Uh he's teaming with um Apple TV, the guys from Scrubs. Um nice.

SPEAKER_03

It's on Apple TV or HBO Max.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I'm sorry, HBO Max. Yeah, sorry, yeah, right.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, uh have that.

SPEAKER_01

Zach Brath directs. And it's Zach Brath directed this?

SPEAKER_02

Really? Comedy that there.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, and um man, John C. John C. Riley? No. The guy that played Dr. Cox on Scrubs. He is also in the show. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I can't believe it.

SPEAKER_03

The tall guy with the hair.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So that's actually everybody, man. It's quite funny. It's quite funny. And it's got Jamie Tart from the. It's got Jamie Tart from Ted Lasso. Uh that show is really good. It's about he's like uh yeah, uh like an author, right? He's an author. He writes like, you know, just kind of beach trashy novels like spy throwers, and he gets picked up to be like the resident author in the English department at this small college that his daughter also teaches at. And he's like getting involved in her life again, and like all this other stuff is going on. But quite funny.

SPEAKER_03

That's good.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's pretty good. Um, we've been watching that one. I went back and started re-watching Andor, Star Wars Andrew Andor, okay. Because I'm feeling like a little bit of May the 4th. Uh sometime this episode airs, it will have been May the 4th. So hopefully all celebrated independently. Um, but Star Wars Andor is so good, man. I that soundtrack that they wrote for that show is the is phenomenal. It's probably like the best Star Wars thing to come out, probably in the last decade.

SPEAKER_00

Travis hot take, bro. I couldn't get past the first episode. I couldn't get past I watched the first episode, I was just like, uh, maybe later. Maybe later.

SPEAKER_01

I tried to watch it previously. I made it, I kind of counted, I made it to episode seven and I fell off. And I was like, you know the meme where the guy's like mining for gold and he stops like right before he got the gems. Yeah, that's what I did. Like I was right there on the precipice, all the good stuff, and I left it alone, and I pushed through that this time. It's so freaking good. I'll have to give it a try again because I'm the same with Vic. Yeah. So get to the heist. The heist is like a high point, then there's a slight dip again, and then other stuff ensues that is so good. Uh Mon the girl that plays Mon Mothma. I don't know what that actress's name is. She's phenomenal. Um, I wish I could give this a better shout. I should have pulled up the freaking page before I started talking about it. But just the music, the settings, the actors are all just great. And um, although the story does have some dips and it slows down a little bit, okay. You get more in like the political drama than like the you know, starships go fast and shoot each other down, like less of that in this show, a little more nuanced, but man, if you push through, it's so good. It's good.

SPEAKER_00

I'm gonna have to know for sure. I'm gonna have to.

May The 4th Plans And Star Wars Games

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'll have to give that a go. Yep. There you go. Speaking of which, I know that this will air after the fact, but like, how are you guys uh celebrating May the 4th?

SPEAKER_00

Uh well at work they're having a barbecue, and they encourage us to uh have like uh Star Wars attire.

SPEAKER_01

So I asked I asked the wife. I got the Leia buns, I got everything I guess.

SPEAKER_00

The gold, the key, the whole nine. Yeah, I'm going straight as Jar Jar Bing, so I'm just gonna go the full game and everything.

SPEAKER_03

I'll do the buns tomorrow. Oh, there you go.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, I'm sure we're a dark bigger shirt. It is tomorrow. Oh my goodness. At the time of recording, May the 4th, it is tomorrow. Yes. Okay, well, I hope you all have a great May the 4th and celebrate independently. And I hope uh that you know the uh what it the metacl metaclorians align and bring you great fortune and also maybe some space Jedi powers.

SPEAKER_02

Or just the ability to play the game tomorrow night. I'm good with that.

SPEAKER_01

How about the ability to play a board game tomorrow night? That'd be great.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Battle for Hoth.

SPEAKER_01

Jedi mind trick your uh significant other into playing a board game with you.

SPEAKER_00

Star Wars Rebellion, let's go.

SPEAKER_01

That's a good one.

SPEAKER_00

Another one I need to try.

SPEAKER_01

It's a good game. I love that game. Rebellion, Battle for Hoth. Uh Outer Rim, also a good one.

SPEAKER_00

Outer Rim's a great one.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. Yeah, play a Star Wars game.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. Let's do that. If you played one, you can do it, Amanda.

SPEAKER_03

I don't have any.

SPEAKER_00

There's a thousand.

SPEAKER_02

There's a thousand albums. You'll find something, yes.

SPEAKER_03
